The question of whether affirmative action is a good idea
can be answered with one fundamental question. Does it resolve the racial
discrimination? There are a number of countries that naturally bore racial
discrimination, and there were even government policies that directly
discriminated certain race, such as the apartheid of South Africa. Both sides
agree to the fact that all men are equal but they dissent on the aftermath that
ensue affirmative action. Affirmative Action is a policy which provides a head
start for certain minorities which couldn’t have effective competitiveness with
the majorities. The benefit of Affirmative Action is that the government sends
a message to the society that they pursue equality and willing to eliminate
discrimination. Studies also showed that authoritative institutions such as law
schools, by implementing affirmative action on white students shows ethic
examples. Also, inequality of opportunity is often related to social hierarchy
which can be soothed with affirmative action. However, the opposition argues
that it sends a wrong message to the majority that the minority cannot survive
without special help. Furthermore, the opposition argues that affirmative
action could send more black kids to universities but it cannot guarantee
better academic skills to these students, thus turning meaningless.
